Winter Guiding

CLIMB CLASSIC ROUTES ON THE WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND

Scottish Winter Guiding

Join us this winter on the West Coast of Scotland for unforgettable days out in the mountains. With availability in January and February, we’ll be based around Ben Nevis, Glencoe, and the surrounding areas — home to some of the most iconic winter climbs in the UK. From mixed and ice climbing up to Grade VI on legendary classics like Point Five Gully on Ben Nevis, The Wand at Creag Meagaidh, and North Buttress on Buachaille Etive Mòr, this is Scottish winter climbing at its finest.

Our experienced guides will select routes and objectives that suit your ability, ambitions, and conditions on the day. Whether you want to tick off classic lines or develop new skills in the winter environment, we’ll make sure you get the most out of your time on the hill.

Is this for me?

We welcome both climbers keen to push onto classic Scottish winter routes and those wanting to build their confidence on snow and ice. We can cover everything from basic movement with crampons and ice axes to climbing steeper terrain, as well as winter navigation and avalanche awareness. If you’ve got routes in mind, we’ll do our best to make them happen.

Itinerary:

We’ll meet in the morning at an agreed location near Fort William or Glencoe to go over the plan for the day. After discussing your experience and goals, we’ll choose suitable objectives based on the latest weather and avalanche forecasts. Days typically run from early morning until late afternoon, with a strong focus on safety, skills, and adventure.

You can book single days or a longer block of guiding to make the most of Scotland’s winter season.

  • We provide all essential climbing equipment except for climbing shoes/boots. You’ll need to bring your own suitable clothing and food.

  • We can usually run our courses even in wet/windy conditions, as there are sheltered locations throughout the Lakes. If the weather is unsuitable, we can reschedule for another date or we will provide you with a full refund.

  • If you need to cancel more than 4 weeks before the course, you’ll receive a full refund. Cancellations between 2 and 4 weeks incur a 50% refund, minus a £10 admin fee. Unfortunately, cancellations less than 2 weeks before the course are non-refundable.

  • We usually meet clients at a local cafe in the morning. This gives us a chance to introduce ourselves, discuss the plan, and tailor the day to your goals and experience. If an early start is required we will probably organise a call a day or two beforehand.

  • Lake District Mountain Guides is led by James Boothroyd, who personally runs the majority of our courses. You can learn more about him here. We also work with a trusted team of professional freelance guides, all fully qualified and insured. Your guide will contact you before the course to introduce themselves and outline the plan and answers any questions you may have.
