Introduction to Scrambling

Take the first step in your scrambling journey with a bespoke 2 day course in either the Lake District or North Wales. Our guides will help you progress safely onto technical scrambling terrain, giving you the skills and confidence to tackle classic scrambling and mountaineering routes.

We will design a programme that matches your fitness, experience, and goals. We will look at all the key skills required for safe mountaineering, such as: navigation, movement techniques and use of a rope. We will look in detail at all the stages of planning our adventures and focus on safety throughout all our days in the mountains. On this course you will develop robust and dependable techniques which will keep you safe for years to come.

Is this for me?

This course is suitable for walkers and scramblers with a good level of fitness and some experience in hillwalking or easier scrambling. We’ll tailor the day to your abilities, ensuring you gain practical skills while enjoying the stunning landscapes of the Lakes or North Wales.

Itinerary:

We’ll meet in the morning at a car park or cafe in your chosen location. Before heading out, we’ll discuss your experience and goals, the kit required, and what to bring for a day of scrambling. Then we’ll select suitable routes always prioritising safety while helping you progress confidently.

You can book a single day course or discuss options for multiple days.

Prices:

1 person for 2 days: 500 GBP
2 people for 2 days: 600 GBP

  • Personal clothing and boots

  • We provide all essential climbing equipment except for climbing shoes/boots. You’ll need to bring your own suitable clothing and food.

  • We can usually run our courses even in wet/windy conditions, as there are sheltered locations throughout the Lakes. If the weather is unsuitable, we can reschedule for another date or we will provide you with a full refund.

  • If you need to cancel more than 4 weeks before the course, you’ll receive a full refund. Cancellations between 2 and 4 weeks incur a 50% refund, minus a £10 admin fee. Unfortunately, cancellations less than 2 weeks before the course are non-refundable.

  • We usually meet clients at a local cafe in the morning. This gives us a chance to introduce ourselves, discuss the plan, and tailor the day to your goals and experience. If an early start is required we will probably organise a call a day or two beforehand.

  • Lake District Mountain Guides is led by James Boothroyd, who personally runs the majority of our courses. You can learn more about him here. We also work with a trusted team of professional freelance guides, all fully qualified and insured. Your guide will contact you before the course to introduce themselves and outline the plan and answers any questions you may have.
