Become an independent trad climber on our 4-day course
Our Learn to Trad Climb Course gives you the skills and confidence to safely lead traditional routes, whether you’re moving outdoors for the first time or looking to build independence on rock.
CLIMB IN THE LAKES
The Lake District offers perfect beginner-friendly venues for learning skills. You’ll practice on quality rock in spectacular settings.
INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE
This course combines hands-on trad climbing instruction with expert coaching, helping you become independent on single and multi pitch climbs. You’ll develop strong fundamentals, learn to make safe decisions, and leave ready to plan and lead your own climbs.
BEGINNER FRIENDLY COURSE
No prior trad experience is needed — just enthusiasm, a good level of fitness, and some basic climbing skills (indoor or outdoor).
-
This course is designed to give you the skills, confidence, and experience to lead traditional climbs. You’ll learn everything from placing gear and building anchors to managing multi-pitch routes efficiently and safely.
Each day builds on your progress, helping you develop good habits and sound judgment. By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation in trad climbing and the confidence to plan and lead your own routes.
-
Day one - We’ll start with the fundamentals of traditional climbing, looking at how to rack up and place gear effectively. You’ll learn how to identify good and bad placements and understand the decisions that come from assessing them. There’ll be plenty of hands-on practice placing protection and building solid, reliable belays by combining and equalising gear. We’ll then move on to seconding routes, removing gear safely, and learning how to do it efficiently without dropping anything, all while continuing to assess and understand gear placements.
Day Two - Building on the basics, we’ll get you on the sharp end for some mock leads, with an instructor belaying you on a top rope to keep things safe. You will practice lead belaying and belaying from the top of the crag. We’ll then talk through leading tactics for single-pitch climbs and look at effective strategies for progressing through the grades and improving your skills. If all is going well, you’ll then lead an easy first route with an instructor on the rope beside you, offering coaching and feedback to help you build confidence.
Day Three - The focus shifts to multi-pitch climbing. You’ll learn how to manage stances, organise ropes, and make smooth belay transitions while climbing longer routes. We’ll also cover clear communication and route finding skills.
Day Four - The final day brings everything together. You’ll take more responsibility for leading and managing multi-pitch climbs, with your instructor there to coach and support as needed. We will also develop fundamental rescue skills so you can get yourself out of sticky situations. We’ll finish the course by reviewing key skills and discussing how to keep progressing as an independent trad climber.
By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a range of trad climbs in the Lake District, developing practical experience that prepares you for your independent climbing adventures.
This is a rough outline for the course, it is subject to change depending on the weather and your experience/goals.

We provide all the essential climbing equipment, including harnesses, helmets, ropes, and technical gear. The only thing you’ll need to bring are your own climbing shoes or boots, along with suitable clothing, food, and drink.
We’re usually out in the mountains for around eight hours each day, so make sure to pack a good lunch, some snacks, and at least a litre of water.
If you’d like advice on what clothing to bring, feel free to get in touch or check out our kit lists.
-
We can usually run our courses even in wet or windy conditions, as there are plenty of sheltered venues throughout the Lake District. If the forecast looks cold and wet, make sure to bring extra layers and good waterproofs.
Wet weather means we get colder faster and use more energy, so it’s worth packing a bit more food than you would for a normal day out. If the weather becomes unsuitable, we’ll reschedule your course for another date or offer a full refund.
-
If you need to cancel more than 4 weeks before the course, you’ll receive a full refund. Cancellations between 2 and 4 weeks incur a 50% refund, minus a £10 admin fee. Unfortunately, cancellations less than 2 weeks before the course are non-refundable.
-
We usually meet at a local car park or cafe in the morning. This gives us a chance to introduce ourselves, discuss the plan for the day, and get to know you so we can tailor the course to your goals and experience.
If an early start is needed, we’ll arrange a quick call a day or two beforehand to confirm the details.
